I once tried to drive a minibus up the pass (don't ask me which one; I
think it was Hardknott BICBW 'cos I can't remember now which direction
we were going in). Reversing back down was 'fun' when I realised that
with that much traffic around it was going to be stop start stop all the
way. The problem was that I was physically incapable of operating the
handbrake successfully, so would be unable to rely on it either
ascending or descending.

A later adaptation was an extension to the lever, giving more, er,
leverage. It was very successful and I was finally able to stop the bus
on a hill where previously I'd not dared.
