But in many cases much longer distances are involved.

A return trip to Glencoe from Glasgow at the week-end could very
easily be much more than five days commuting from the suburbs to the
city centre.

And just how many cars commute back and forth between Edinburgh and
Glasgow each day? There has to be some reason why the M8 is always so
busy morning and evening. The number of cars going to mountain areas
each weekend is a smidgen of the number on that road daily. And
furthermore each 'mountian' car will contain 3 or 4 persons, whereas
those on the daily commute rarely contain more than the driver.

I think if you did your research properly before asking others to do
it for you, you will learn that tourism in the Highlands is now the
only effective and universal industry there. If it wasn't encouraged
in one way or another, then the area would be become seriously
impoverished and would require even greater support from central
government than the anything that comes from 'exemptions'.
