Although Paul hasn't been using the split feature (until his most recent post I notice), his posts are truncated in the RSS reader. Perhaps there's a different setting that governs this.

There's a setting within Options >> Reading >> Syndication Feeds and select Summary to display a truncated post in RSS feeds.

AFAIK truncation in a post on the blog requires a plugin or a setup within the theme. I could be wrong though.

I'm not sure that Google will penalise for duplication of information within a blog and IMO the truncation of a main post is a PITA
.
