My camera literally ate AA batteries everyday and rechargeables was not an option. My mate however lasted well on two Li-on batteries and we were there for over a month.
You could, of course, take a good film cameras (gosh! How horribly untrendy!) and not have any electrical problems at all - not to mention any quality advantages...
