short & sweet..i only want to spend a 100 quid,garmin Etrex or Geko 201 &
why?

I've got a Garmin E-Trex I got off e-bay for 60 squids...
One of the Gecko's doesn't have a download to computer feature so have
a good look at the specs!!

It's the 101 that's the Comedy Geko to avoid, the 201 looks to be
functionally very similar to the eTrex, but is a little smaller and
lighter. The eTrex may well have a slightly larger screen... either
will work okay as a basic unit, get your paws on them and see which you
like the feel of more.

Avoid the Geko 101 since it can't be connected to a computer for either
data transfer or user upgrade.

Last time I looked at the specs the Geko 201 had more data memory for
trackpoints, waypoints and routes than the standard eTrex

However on checking the specs at Garmin I see that the eTrex units have
now been updated to a similar spec to the Geko.

500 waypoints, 20 routes, 10000 trackpoints.

and also the Geko 201 had better featured software to handle the
tracklog. On the counter side the eTrex uses AA rather than AAA cells
so has a longer battery life on one set and as Pete points out the
screen and backlight is slightly better on the eTrex. The key layout
is different as well.

I prefer the Gekos, mainly for their size and weight.
