No doubt I will get flamed for this but why do people want to analyse
where they went on their walking ?
Why do we tick lists? Who knows? I just like doing it.
It was interesting when I asked why I should get a GPS recently the
predominant answer was that users wanted to analyse where they went -
personally how odd !!! I write up my log of the day and my memory,
even a week later, is usually good enough to be able to do that from
the map.
It does seem therefore that the GPS is just being used an expensive
memory aid ! This does make it sound even more like a 'must-have'
electronic toy.
Memory can play tricks, some of us can't be bothered with writing logs
and journals but a GPS track downloaded into the computer is a superb
aide memoire. If you also take photographs you can cross reference the
timestamp in the EXIF data recorded by the camera with the timestamp
in the GPS log to see where a particular pictue was taken.
Yes a GPS is a great toy and you don't need one but maybe just once
you will find yourself in a featureless place unsure of exactly where
you are and will be useful...
