Re: GPS recommendation please

I plan my walks with a map, a nice circular one with a Pub half way, unless
it's closed ;-( . I used to be a sailing man and got a big kick from
crossing a stretch of water and arriving (well nearly) where I planned, so
am familiar and happy with maps, charts and compasses. Though I can easily
see the danger of relying on a GPS totally, I rather like the idea of a
one, especially if it shows me, on reaching home, where I went wrong. Which
make and model would the panel recommend please? TIA

While i'm sure there will be many good suggestions, i'll suggest mine.

I originally bought an E-trex Venture for doing exactly what you mention.
You can upload your routes to it from mapping software and then upload them
after. Some of the cheaper GPS units dont allow you to do this. You also get
a cable included with the unit, and unless you risk e-bay, an official cable
can cost over £20. This is sometimes the difference between a basic model
and the next one up (in my case the e-trex basic plus cable was of a similar
price as the Venture; which came with cable).

I paid £114 for mine from globalpositioningsystems.co.uk, and it's still a
similar price now.

I've upgraded recently to a mapping GPS, the Garmin GPSmap76c that was
available at a one off bargain price of £99. Uploaded with SMC free contour
maps, and the summits insetred as waypoints, it's a useful little system.
I'm not overly convinced though that it offers me *that* much more than a
basic GPS (other than pretty pictures and 'colour'. wooo) as i find the
analasys of the route once home the main advanatage of using it.

p.s. it might also be worth looking on the newsgroup uk.rec.gps if you can
get it on your news server.
