We all have our momentary lapses in judgment, especially when we
are tired, but to set out ill-equipped in the first place is planned
stupidity.
I often set out "ill equipped" with regards to navigational aids. It
adds to the experience. Try it, you're missing out. The Corrieayrack
Pass would have been fairly boring if I'd known where it was going to
take me to. The beach at Kinloch Laggan was a pleasant surprise at the
end because I figured it was most likely to take me more towards the
the Cairngorms. Ofcourse it's a bit tough studiously ignoring those
bloody Scottish Rights of Way Society signs.
I'm not advocating complete nannying. Good luck to those who are
mountain-savvy and have the judgment to be able to take that kind
of calculated risk, who only rarely if ever need the help of rangers
or rescue teams. That's probably most contributors to URW.
However, there are some who are a danger to themselves and to
others and often make the same mistakes repeatedly or who ignore
advice when they lack the skills and experience to make that kind
of assessment. I meet one or two every patrol.
