Re: EGNOS working at last!

I'll give it another try - not because I need the extra accuracy, but
just to see if I can get it working!

Well it sounds like you were almost there. As I said, Garmin have just
released a patch for the 60/76 series to make it easier to connect to the
EGNOS satellites, so it may be worth you checking their site to see if
there's a patch for your model.

So, if EGNOS is so difficult and
unreliable,

The reason it's so difficult and unreliable right now is that it isn't fully
working yet, it's still in the testing stage. Once it's fully operational
it should work much better.

what use is it except as a technical curiosity?

When there are enough satellites and it's accurate enough, it may be used to
help land aeroplanes safely (GPS is not quite good enough for that yet), and
it will make accurate surveying a lot easier.

If its use
is mainly maritime, it seems a lot of money to spend on whizz-bang
technology to enable lobster fishermen to locate their pots more
easily!

I'm sure they're not spending all that money for the benefit of walkers and
lobster fishermen! There are lots of good professional and commercial
reasons for it, we're just lucky enough to share the benefits.

Next time you're out walking, try hiding something under a rock and marking
the spot. Next time you go there, see if you can find it again.
