Though as long as there's enough hot water to dissolve it I'd guess that the hot water will do a better job of helping to eat dirt, and in time it will become cold water in any case, so might as well go with hot, I think.
With the smaller flasks we've foung standing them upside down in the dishwasher does the job very well, though of course you need a dishwasher for this!
