No. They are proper maps (i.e. computer versions of paper maps) whereas the
point of the Garming sofware is twofold - to select map areas to upload to
the GPS, and also to manage waypoints, routes etc. I usually do the latter
in OziExplorer on proper maps,

I thought you used Anquet to sort your waypoints, routes etc? Whilst
we're on that subject, I started playing around with Anquet for the
first time very briefly last night. When you create a route in Anquet,
it creates a waypoint for every turn in direction on the route. I
can't remember what you call them, but you referred to them as
'breadcrumbs'. Can't anquet create routes with these 'breadcrumbs' so
that waypoints can be used for what they are intended, or at least how
it was explained to me what they are intended for, that is to mark key
milestones / points of interested (e.g. photo's) etc. ?

Since v06, Anquet now speaks Garminese. i.e. Waypoints, Routes and
Tracks all have the same meanings in Anquet as they do in a Garmin GPS.

In both cases, routes are formed by listing waypoints in the order they
are to be visited.

The function you are referring to are sometimes called "Points of
Interest" in other GPS systems (e,g, Tomtom). As far as I know, the
"recreational" Garmins do not replicate this function (my small Geko
certainly doesn't). This category can be simulated in Anquet. The best
way is probably to create a separate database. POIs can then be
imported from other references (perhaps using GPSu) and displayed as
required. These can of course be used as route waypoints if desired and
can also be downloaded to the GPS as either on-route or off-route
waypoints.
