Why national parks,
Because it's a convenient list (short and clearly defined) of popular
walking locations. I'm just curious as to which ones are the most popular
in the eyes of a very small sample of posters in this newsgroup.
what about all the other beautiful areas that
haven't benn arbitrarily designated to become blighted tourist
hotspots?
Perhaps because it's the blighted tourist hotspots that I'm interested in?
Which hotspots are the most blighted? ;-)
Seriously though, without a clear list the same thing would happen as with
the last poll, i.e. you'd end up with dozens of single votes for different
places, which doesn't make for very interesting results. Also, there'd
probably be disagreements over boundaries, which people choosing to define
areas differently (e.g. purists insist that Snowdonia only refers to the
northern part of the park, some consider Cadair Idris to be in Mid-Wales
whilst others think it's in Snowdonia). With this list there can be no
arguments about borders (however arbitrary), and the fact that it's short
should give more meaningful results.
Actually, my Anquet GB Overview map shows a large number of additional
areas in green (anyone with Anquet can check this). Most of these are
probably "areas of outstanding natural beauty" or have other designations,
and do provide a much better coverage of the whole country, particularly
Scotland (e.g. Ben Nevis & Glen Coe, Cuillin Hills, Wester Ross and so on)
but no doubt many of these borders are arbitrary too, and still not
everywhere is covered (e.g nothing in Mid-Wales). I had considered
including all of these but it would have been a much longer list, and no
doubt there'd still be complaints about arbitrary borders, and probably
more complaints about certain areas not being included (if my map is not
sufficiently up to date).
So, whatever the limitations of this simple poll, it is what it is, you
can take it or leave it. It's just a bit of harmless fun.
Paul.
I have only been in a few of the National Parks and loved Yorkshire Dales -
I think of Scotland north of the highland divide as just one big "National
Park"
How about a poll using the Harveys Maps as our guide to "parklike areas in
Scotland"??
