Is it that or oldmaps.co.uk that you remember? I started looking for
oldmaps recently and found it defunct.

I have been looking at the first surveys both of my current locality and
where I grew up and several name changes are evident. Thwaites Bank to
Thwaites Brow Road. Franks Lane to Fronks Road.

AIUI early naming relied on OS surveyors understanding correctly what
some local yokel claimed was the name. Bad enough in England, worse in
Wales. Dolgelley (Dolgellau), Cader (Cadair) Idris and Cwm Cowarch
(Cywarch) come to mind. And as for Scotland ... :-)
