Paul
You mentioned you had a GPS with you. I took mine when I did my ML course
last year (March). I went to do the ML training at a centre some where in
Llandudno Junction.
As a day job, part of my job is to evaluate on IT and its purposefulness
alongside other and current systems, so I'm able to cope with change if the
need is there and valid
At the time of the course I could map read and had a fair hand in using a
compass but obviously wanted to learn how to use a compass better than I
knew how to, along with all the other elements of the course. If I can
afford to I intend to take the assessment early next year, as I too was told
that a should not try to consolidate inside 12 months
I was utterly gob smacked by the centres approach to this (old) technology.
I was first fobbed off, when I asked about the technology. "Oh yeah we'll
cover those later on". When I pushed the issue (I was a student, I was
trying to learn) I was given the excuse of "Batteries don't operate well
when they are cold", and "What if you're batteries wear down". My first
thought went along the lines on "no s**t, really, you're kidding me!", my
second thought was. "Well what if you take spare batteries, bugger me you
take spare socks don't you?!", again the situation was dropped by the
instructor
I took my GPS with me on exped and kept it running. I wanted a route of
where we'd been and I wanted to record spot heights. I even managed to
change the batteries
towards the very end of the exped, I was talking with one of the other
trainees and the subject got onto GPS's, I flipped mine out of the covering.
The berating I got was unbelievable. I think the local sheep even managed to
shelter from the incoming verbal. I was too tired to even respond. I flipped
the cover back on and carried on
Now I know full well what the ML training book says and I know full well the
content of the ML course, that's not what I'm jabbering on about.
My map reading/Nav/Night Nav skills have improved severely since the course
and I am more than grateful but I was just wondering if you were given any
stick for having a piece of technology with you that meant you had to rely
on a couple of AA batteries or if anyone else had come across such
techno-phobes in this day and age
BTW I totally agree with your comments about saying what they want to hear.
I too tried the "I think we are here", using a gloved hand to point a
plateau on Cnicht
Steve
