Altimeters

I have a alimeter on my GPS, however I was thinking of getting a standlaone
one, because given enough attention I hear that they are more accurate.
True?

I would also like the functionality of knowing exactly how high I was during
a walk, though I can do this when I study the map of the route after.

Has any one got any reccomendations for a good altimeter?
