Much depends on where you are, though. They were at risk of falling to
their deaths, but in many places over here that risk is absent.

Well if you know exactly where you are, and decide where you want to
go, it's quite possible to take a bearing off the map, put it on the
compass and walk on it. Pacing and timing can be used to calculate
distance covered, although clearly the effectiveness of those methods
is going to be affected by the terrain. Much of the time, though, it
should be possible to have a pretty good idea of how far one has
worked on pacing alone. If it's possible to see things like walls as
well then the job becomes easier.
