Just to let you all know that uk.rec.walking celebrates its 10th birthday tomorrow. It was the first group created under the new rules of uk.*
Some [Chris and Martin at least] have been here since the beginning and I turned up in July 96 - but the first posting I made seems to have been in December.
The first posting recorded on Google was as follows:
1. Bill Edwards Oct 11 1995, 7:00 am Newsgroups: uk.rec.walking, uk.net.news, rec.backcountry Followup-To: From: Bill Edwards <> - Find messages by this author Date: 1995/10/11 Subject: Welcome to uk.rec.walking - Thanks - See Charter
Hurrah!
Its taken since April to get this group up and working and it is the first group to to be created on uk.* to the new rules. Can I thank all those who took part, all those who voted, but especially Mark Alexander <> who organised the voting.
From the many postings in the last couple of days it seems this newsgroup is going to be a huge success, but can I take the opportunity to post the charter for those who would like to see it.
CHARTER
This newsgroup aims to provide a medium for walkers, hikers and ramblers in the UK to exchange information and discuss common issues. Topics might include routes, accommodation, equipment, clothing, books, maps & techniques.
Input from outside the UK will be welcome, as long as it relates to walking in the UK. Topics relating to rock scrambling and hillwalking in full Winter conditions would be more appropriate to uk.rec.climbing. Likewise topics related to accomodation with YHA are more appropriate to uk.rec.youth-hostel. Avoid unneccesary cross-posting.
All the best
