The merely exceedingly difficult we lose the tuits for before breakfast,
the impossible we can embark upon right now I spose. Can I assume the
dead disk was the only disk, and if so, how big is the new one, and how
was the win98 installation/restoration done? Partitions and details
thereof might be important...

Wasn't the only one. setup before probs had:
disk 1, two partitions: Win98 installed on C:, Data on E:.
disk 2, one partition: XP installed on D:

(98 installed first from CD, then XP.)

To cut to the chase: I have both 98 and XP running on an old box
(AX6BC motherboard ).

That is old if it is what I think it is - possibly old enough to be
problematic with some recent drivers and possibly even an arj hard disk
above a certain size.

Indeed - had to update the bios to get it to recognize the 80GB disk
1.

Ooh - what were they?

Forgetting the "don't fix it ..." maxim. I tried to install an PCI
wifi card. Advertised as being 98 and XP compatible. Installed in
spare slot. Nothing. Not an electronic sausage. back to shop.
Installed in test system running XP, identified straight away. Back
home. Tried another slot, then took all cards (modem, USB/firewire/
sound) and tried the Wifi in all (with XP). Still nothing. Put back
in box to have a think, replaced old cards (but not in same slots).
Re-boot XP. Fine. Re-boot 98 "New hardware". This is the point where
the install CD is needed and forehead meets wall. Then, just for fun,
the venerable hard drive holding XP dies (isn't recognised, won't
format). Repartion the main disk, so now has a third partition,
install XP on it. All hunky dory on that front. Only problem is 98.

I re-
installed XP into a new partition, and that's running OK, but the
existing win98SE (which spotted the hardware moves and nagged about
the hide-and-seek playing install CD) is pretty flaky.

That sort of suggests drive letter re-arrangements might have happened.
Win98 can take exception to that. Any ancient software installed in XP
may also have done unsavoury things to the Win98 installation if Win98
remained as drive C and the installation was hard coded. Some modern
stuff can be a bit dodgy like that as well.

See above: Drive assignements seem to be OK. 98 was installed first,
and is on C:. XP thinks it's on G:, but I'm not complaining (yet)

The graphics
has reverted to a basic mode, and trying to re-install the drivers
gets a message which claims that no nvidia chips can be found
(although XP spotted them).

That could be because the old drivers are still installed with settings
that aren't helping. Have you completely removed the old drivers?

Yes. Several times.

 > The USB printer "needs user intervention"

- (again, XP OK), and a bit of poking shows that devmgr can't see any
USB interfaces.

Did that jbex at any point between replacing the disk and installing XP?
Again, complete removal and replacement of all the printer software
might help, unless the Win98 USB subsystem has been compromised, in
which case there is a paddle up a gum tree with advice scrawled on it
which you won't like.

I think it is the USB subsystem. (Arrrgh)

Any suggestions as to why 98 appears to be snubbing the devices that
the BIOS and XP seem to be talking to in a very friendly manner?  Mr
Google didn't find anything appropriate when I asked.

Go into safe mode in Win98, remove all related software and drivers from
affected hardware, then try re-installing them again when not in safe
mode. That would expend some tuits, but not necessarily with any great
chances of fixing things as uninstall routines in Win98 software were
often a bit penc. The rssbeg might be better spent on getting your Win98
apps to jbex in XP, which does have various compatibility modes to run
older software, but can get a bit involved to get right.

This is just the world's way of telling me to clear out the attic,
isn't it. That's where the install disks are!

A re-install from scratch of Win98 might help, but will mean XP will
need repairing afterwards. Awkward, but not impossible, and if the
current state of the hardware is responsible for the prarlms, it might
not help at all.

XP wasn't that busy - and has a fairly new re-install, so not much
effort to rebuild.

(Before you ask, there are a couple of lagacy apps that I still run on
98)

TOBAGO!? --------------------------------^^^^^^

Plan[9] B would be to get advice on what to do to migrate the lagacy
apps, but I can't offer any advice without knowing what they are, other
than the longer you leave it the more difficult it will get.

Plan C and beyond would involve an arj PC with enough oomph to run
virtualisation or summat, but would prolly borrow from plan B TAAW, and
mean lots of stuff to learn.

New PC being considered anyway.

[9] All plans involving winders can be assumed to need a reboot between
each bit.
