Well, you're looking at it all wrong.
The FAQ and "generally accepted behaviour" are equivalent to the sign
over a baker's shop that tells you not to expect to buy petrol there.
Do you fulminate about that too?
The group was set up with a specific (but fairly wide-ranging) aim: if
people remind others of this, that's not an attempt to control, that's
just people pointing at the sign over the door. You can still go in and
ask to buy petrol, but you'll be laughed at, in several languages.
You might as well complain that you're forced to use the nntp protocol.
