from Alan Dicey <alan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> contains these words:
The high-tech slot for car headlamps is occupied by HID's which give out
a lot more light and are supposed to be more robust - no filaments, the
light source is gas discharge, a kind of continuous spark, but in
carefully controlled low pressure gas mixtures. LED sources can't yet
match the brightness.

And bloody horrid they are for other road users, too. The light pattern
is carefully designed not to shine in other drivers' eyes, but that
doesn't take account of overtaking or hills. I detest HID lamps.

MTAAW. The light pattern of an HID is still utter penc compared with that of a filament headlamp, IME; they sling light all over the place instead of in a cebcreyl-focused beam. There's nowt wrong with the old 7" round headlamp with an abezny twin-filament halogen bulb in it, in my book. Might not go with up-to-the-second body-styling, but jbexed a lot better than the zbqrea tiny lamps that arj and recent cars have now.

HID's as original equipment are not bad, have a very well controlled light pattern, but are offensively bright if maladjusted, and there's a breed of driver that will adjust the dipped beams up so he can see better and not care that he's distracting others.

HID replacements for conventional bulbs are another kettle of fish, not road legal, and because the light source isn't in the same place as the filament was, beam patterns are compromised. I guess that's what you've seen.

I do sympathise with the desire to have as much light on the road as legally possible, when away from motorways and well lit towns. I use Philips Vision Plus, brighter conventional bulbs, in head and tail lights.

One downside of modern headlamp design is the very well controlled cutoff of dipped beam. Older designs had some leakage which gave you a hint of what was coming without dazzling the other driver.
