so you've got about 1.4V and 1.2 Ah, which is about 1.68Wh, I reckon.
Considering it has what amounts to a dc-dc converter in it (unless someone's
molished LEDs wot run at 1.4V) that will presumably be less than 100%
efficient, which means if you get more'n about 1.5 hours at full output
you'll be doing well.
At 1A or so discharge rate, I'd reckon a 1.2AH-rated AAA cell would deliver a fair bit less than 1AH, and at a terminal voltage of little more than 1.2 volts, if not less - their rated capacity is only likely to be achievable over 5 or 10 hours. I'd say about 30 or 40 minutes would be doing well with 1A drain.
I'd guess the torch will indeed probably have an inverter to 3 volts or so in it; others which hfr one or two cells, and which I've taken to bits, have had one in them.
