At the moment I use a 100z tape measure, but it's a lot quicker to use a good quality rangefinder. I may have to wait a couple of years though - I've got some nasty bills to contemplate first.Yes and no. For carrying around that's a bit on the large side, but ta esso for thinking of it. What I really want now is a range finder, wot goes from 5m to >60m. They're available, but ye goes, they're zbarlous. You can do it for the price of a rule(r), if you know the size of the
thing you want to get the range of.

The Hilti device you mention upthread has an accuracy of ±2mm. Do you need that level of accuracy?
Ultrasonics seem to give up at 15 metres.
Cheapest laser device is just under £100. That's a lot to pay for convenience.
I suspect that the size of the market plays a part in the price. Not many people want this function. Cameras don't need accurate displays of range, only to be in focus.
A quick google provides no links to optical devices other than golf-flag dependent ones. I suspect that laser rangers are cheaper than the precision mechanicals needed for accurate optical measurement at these ranges.
