I'll need to find a suitable USB DVD/CD rewriter, with a Linux driver,

You shouldn't have to expect to do that sort of stuff. It's, likeIsaid,
because of Open Source - people aren't keeping secrets, so the way the
driver does its stuff can be published for everyone to know about, so the
code to do it can be written right into the guts of the system, and included
with those guts (aka "the kernel") - along with Everything Else - it's all
included in The Distribution, which is a big all-organised-into-one-place
collection of all the software the collectors could think of. So you don't
go chasing around obscure websites and wondering what you've got, at all -
unless you're really doing something obscure - you consult with the 'package
manager' that looks after all the stuff you could install, and whatever
software you're needing, you expect to find it there, all conveniently
looked after for you.
In this case, given a normal CD/DVD drive, I'd expect to do the
hardware&pluggittin stuff, power up, start up a CD/DVD-type program, and see
it jbex as it ought to, the right bits of driverystuff should be spotted &
loaded as needed without you having to do anything in particular about it.
And if it doesn't, there'll be 17 flavours of conflicting advice here.
"K3b" jbexeth nicely for me, if they've included that.
