Depends what you want to know...
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/ can be very helpful for
simple issues
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ is well
written, but does not cover the things I have trouble with.
http://documentation.openoffice.org/ gives access to some more long-
winded help for more complex issues - like mail merge.

For the table, which is currently causing me endless frustration, I
abandoned the WP, and decided to use the spreadsheet instead.  I want
something like an address book, wherein one column would be surnames and
therefore in alphabetical order, and the addresses would stay with the
correct names.  Can I find out how to do that?  No.  And can I find out
how to order a selected group of rows so that I can include things like
sub-headings?  No.  I'm sure it can be done, but I don't know the
correct words to ask the help files for...

in Calc: Data - Sort - takes care of most things. To deal with
headings either highlight only the rows you want to sort, or select
everything and in the Data - Sort - Options tab tick the box about
your range including headings.

in Writer: Tools - Sort does much the same sort of thing. There
heading rows should already be defined when then table is created so
you don't have to remind it when sorting.

For more complex things you would have to repeat your subject heading
in each row as column A, then the surnames in col. B etc, and sort
first on A then on B.

The wiser heads will say 'use a database' but its a lot of bother for
christmas card lists.

Oh, and if anysheddi can tell me why the WP gives me 'access denied'
every time I try to open it, it'd be nice to know.  I can open
individual documents, but if I try to open the programme itself, it
snarls at me.  Very frustrating, having to open new text documents from
within a spreadsheet.  Grrr.

This is a guess. The basic app is called soffice. (/usr/lib/soffice -
/usr/lib/ooo3/program/soffice) and there are some 'wrapper'
executables that look like the individual apps - /usr/lib/ooo3/program/
swriter for example. In fact, these just pass the file name parameter
to soffice executable with a --writer switch.

You can always open soffice directly, and it will default (normally to
a text document) . If the protection bits are not set on the other
wrapper executables - or even if there are no logical links set up for
them - then you might get what you describe.

check for links to the wrapper executqbles (swriter, scalc etc) in /usr/
lib/. Check the access rights on those. Follow the links to wherever
the actual excutables are (e.g. /usr/lib/ooo3/program/) and check the
access writes on the executables in there.

My system, for example, only has soffice down the path - none of the
others exist like that.
