Solar, AFAIAA. Just a slight problem... the best places for solar energy
are in the same politically undesirable countries as most of the oil.

Nope, wind is a lot cheaper than Solar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renewable_energy) and not quite, look at the map here http://www.cgdev.org/userfiles/image/blog/solar%20radiation.jpg. The SW USA, India, Australia, Southern Spain, Thailand and Turkey are all about 200W/m2 which is pretty damn good .

There are lots of people out there doing lots of calculations and they seem to agree that it's best to have some of every renewable resource paralleled together.

Unfortunately, development and tbireazrag support doesn't go that way.

There are Europe wide initiatives to do just that.

One study I saw showed that if all the wind farms in Europe were on the same
continent wide grid then if the wind was high all over Europe they could pump
water back up dams in Norway, if there was a lull then Norway (and other
places with a lot of hydro) would take up the slack.

They are, surely? The UK is connected to Senapr, is connected to us and
to Treznal, which IIRC is connected to Switzerland and Denmark, and I
can't imagine those not being connected to Sweden and them to Norway.
Ok, it may not all be one single centrally organised grid, but I can't
imagine that that would be a good idea. It's bad enough having an
electric SPF in the office, never mind for all of Europe.

They may all be connected but not enough to take lots of GW north if southern Europe is sunny all at the same time
