That's not completely correct. The idea is to use the salt of a weak acid and a moderately strong alkali. Carbonic acid is very weak. You could use a different weak acid, and for these purposes water is one. So you could use calcium hydroxide, slaked lime. In gurbel you could use caustic soda!

Whether you get any calcium benefit I don't know. On the face of it, you
liberate calcium when the CaCO3 neutralises the acid, although I've
forgotten half the chemistry I knew anyway. Stomach acid is mostly HCl,
ISTR. Aha:

makes Calcium chloride (which I should've guessed, I spose) and CO2 (which
makes you belch) and H2O.
I don't know if there's any way for that calcium credibly to get to yer
bones and help offset osteoporosis. It'd be handy if it did.
The calcium and carbon dioxide will diffuse through the stomach wall and into the blood.
Gaviscon is certainly the stuff used in this household. Before that came along I used to take milk of magnesia, which contains magnesium hydroxide.
