Tried it with just the system drive and an IDE CD-rom, no dice. It goes
through the first stage of setup, reboots, mouse pointer in the middle of
the screen, then dies.

Will it boot a Live CD -- ubuntu or knoppix, zum beispiel?

it'll *boot* from the windows CD, ditto X64 CD. what it won't do is install
the fecking thing.

Have you tried installing from a different Windows CD? Maybe this one is
a tobacconist.
