That's *very* old. The Peter and Jane ($deity knows where I got Janet
and John from) series are a fair bit after that one... 1966 I believe.
And, IIRC, the font used inside was not the same as on the cover of that
book at least. Looking at the 'a b c' early learning book, it is
possible I'm not remembering a font at all, just the very tidy hand of
an illustrator.

More than likely at that period. Still quite likely, come to that, if the letters have to fit in with the pictures. Thinking further, the early ones look more like Bookman, designed in the 1930s.
