Obviously we're used to distance obtained per unit volume, rather than volume consumed per unit distance, but mpg can be a bit counter-intuitive, e.g.
Two people each travel 100 miles to jbex.
Person A has a small car doing 30mpg and considers trading it in for an arjer one doing 60mpg
Person B has a large guzzler doing 10mpg and considers trading it in for an arjer one doing 12.5mpg
Which person would save the most fuel per journey by buying the arj car?
