Yes, and mine was at home then anyway. She was willing to use
Partition Magic, but it turned out that the copy lying around the lab was
NT-era and didn't want to play with Vista at all.
Can gparted get around the problem of "immovable" files?
Meanwhile, I semi-successfully upgraded one of my Athlon64X2
machines to a Core2Quad the other night[1]. Main problem was cables that
don't reach (floppy, IDE, and power switch) and a single IDE interface on
the mobo, necessitating changing the DVD drive to be a slave to the HDD.
Currently I get CRC errors if I plug the DVD in, and it won't boot from
the SATA drive with Ubuntu on it, but does hop across happily to the IDE
drive with Scientific Linux CERN. It's running seti@home ~15% faster than
my other quad, even while using the generic SSE2 client. I put that down
to DDR2 memory rather than DDR. Once it's stabilised I'll change to the
SSE3 client to see if that makes a difference. ...and put in the two new
2 GB DIMMs to go with the 2x1 GB I had on hand already...
Ah, I mentioned that because it was the gparted live disk that
alerted me to the CRC errors. It was all running very slowly, and not
booting from the SATA or IDE disk. I put a Ubuntu DVD in and it hung
some way in; similarly with Knoppix. Then I tried the gparted disk and
it failed citing CRC errors. A bit of fiddling with the connexions soon
had me with the DVD disconnected and the HDD working.
I've found a floppy cable that looks long enough, so I might soon
break my own record for the fastest machine to boot PC-DOS 1.1!
[1] New mobo, CPU, and 4 GB memory. £290 all up.
