see? Naive...

There a balance of probability, I'd say, at most. You could held
without
charge for 28 days tomorrow 'cos someone didn't like your face or
thought
that you were acting suspiciously.

I think a plod would be pushed to get the necessary authorization without
a
valid reason, which may or may not turn out to be correct, but a reason
nonetheless.

They may have to present a reason, but I'm damned sure they can just say
"we
think he's a terrrrist" in practice.

You could then be charged and held on remand until you get to appear in
court.

Charged with? with some offence, ie, a reason.

doesn't follow that you did it. You can be charged on the basis that you
can't provide an ailibi for the time the crime was committed, more or
less.

But unlikely to be convicted. They have to prove you guilty beyond
reasonable doubt don't they?

So, maybe not so naive.

And as I have said already, my original point referred to criminals. ie,
those who did it. Not the exceptions that prove the rule.

ah, well, see you didn't make that plain to start with. Actually, looking
back, you did imply it.

No, I said "criminal elements" That means criminals. Not a friend of a
friend on remand, or arrested and released in short order. Criminals. , How
plain do you want it?

Personally, I rather favour the line that Gandalf, in Tolkein's LOTR,
uses,
when someone says that Gollum deserves death.

"Deserves it! I dare say he does. Many that live deserve death and some
that
die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be so eager to deal
out death in judgement."

So now you cite fairy stories as an authority?

Get real. The world is imperfect. Shit happens to all of us in one form or
another. We have to deal with it and move on.
