So, do I learn about the joys of British plumbing, or do i GAMI?
OK, I don't think I can manhandle bathtubs up and down the stairs; how
long would it take a competent plumber to do an exchange and a bit of
make-good (new side-panel, basically)? I hope they come in standard
sizes!

GAMI.
Getting bathtubs downstairs can be fairly easy - with the safe help of
Mr Sledge Hammer and the Merry Wallops.
There may be standard sizes, but they may not have been standard when
your tub was installed. Ditto for the pipes, taps, joints, etc.
The chances are you'll have to do most of the making good yourself and
it may involve more than just the side-panel.
(Have you looked at those floor boards yet? Tiles?)

Think yourself lucky!
A bathtub that empties approx. twice as fast as everyone else.
No boasting now!
