Ah. Well, I am not even getting that far. Like I say I get one
line of white vdu text for a few seconds, then a blank screen and HD
hunting.

Sounds like you haven't got the BIOS pointing at the CD as the first
boot option..

That can't be it, because at this point it has already booted from the
CD. It's doing the hardware inspection. My guess is that it's looking
for a partition to install on, and is having prombles with the
partition table.

The next thing I would do is to repartition the disk to make sure that
there's a space for XP to use, and to rewrite the partition information
in case that's what's hootered.
