Hmmmm.
As someone who works in the field, I would normally recommend a rackmount
case. They've built to take the 24 hour duty cycles for servers, in my
experience desktop cases and PSUs are less reliable.
Having said that Supermicro do excellent servers which are either rack
mount or tower cases.
As you are going to put together a storage server, Supermicro have several
chassis which have slots in the front for multiple SATA drives.
But as this is for a home purchase then budget is an issue.
Me, I would think of one of the new short-chassis rackmount Supermicro
servers, nineteen inch wide with 14 inch depth. Put a dual-core Opteron in
it. There are PCI cards with external SATA connectors on, so you could
expand the storage relatively cheaply with external drives.
