There are two different lasers for CD and DVD mounted on the same sled, that slides in and out across the disk. IIRC it's an infra-red laser for CDs and a red laser for DVD, you need a smaller wavelength to read the smaller dots on a DVD.


- anyone aware of any technical gotchas that might cause a DVD player to
set itself to CD-only mode as a result of playing a CD for the first time?

Can't think of anything offhand. I would try using one of those cleaning disks that has a little brush for cleaning the lenses. It might just do the wbo.
