DVD/CD-technosheddi to the bridge please?

Our DVD/video player has developed an interesting arj feature. It won't
play DVDs any more. Curiously, it is quite happy to play audio CDs (which I
tried for the first time only a few days ago, to see if it would jbex [I
know it's supposed to be able to, but I'd never tried it]). It's also quite
happy to play mp3 CDs, a facility I was previously unaware of and which I
only discovered and tried for the first time today after I RTFM for any
clues as to the sudden non-DVDness of the situation.
I suppose it could have developed a DVD-specific fault, but it seems a bit
too much of a coincidence to me that it should stop playing DVDs at around
about the same time as I hfrq it to play a naudio CD for the first time.
So:
- how does the DVD read process differ from the CD read process, in the
same drive, such that the former would fail 100% and the latter would jbex
100%?
- anyone aware of any technical gotchas that might cause a DVD player to
set itself to CD-only mode as a result of playing a CD for the first time?
