But I can't see the CD drive, on acount of the IDE controller being
borked. There's a hole in my bucket.
Tried using xcopy from DOS to copy the driver CD onto the HDD but it
screwed up the directory structure when it copied and went foom.

I feel a reformat hard disk coming on. First find backed up data,
which has been put in a safe place.
