May I issue a sympathetic "Aaaargh" at this point?

Orrible things. I fought 'em and eventually conquered.

Woo, I wuz told the opposite. A friend did a previous processor upgrade and
didn't unplug the ATX PSU, the mobo got fried and he got a serious
ear-bashing from my partner. I ended up with a new, better board so it
wasn't all bad.

So I've been displuggin and reaching out to the conveniently-positioned
radiator at every turn. And taking every other precaution I could think of.

Anyhoo, today's update is.... I got to the BIOS! <awards herself a round of
applause, drinks to follow> Can't get Windoze to load, stops at "Verifying
DMI pool data". But making progress.

The same friend (from a safe 200 miles off) has me currently running
memcheck (he's convinced I have unseated unforgettory but it's going fine)
and simultaneously d/l Knoppix on the laptop so I can disconnect both HDDs
and see if the rest still works, process of elimination coupled with
short-term amusement, I guess.

Have googled the startup error and it looks scary. But I'll crack it. You
watch.

Cheers,
