Selsey Lifeboat Station shore dive - important information

Selsey RNLI Lifeboat station is a popular shore dive with much to see at a
shallow depth. In addition to the All-Weather Tyne class that launches down
the station ramp, there is also an Inshore Lifeboat that launches off the
beach - use of SMBs is important so that the RNLI crew can identify divers
if necessary.
Unfortunately last weekend, the All Weather Lifeboat was unable to respond
to a MayDay due to divers without SMBs being positioned directly in front of
the launching ramp - although the lifeboat crew tried to attract the divers
attention by banging on the station structure, this was not successful.
We;ve spoken with the RNLI Coxswain and since there is commercial work also
occurring around the station over the summer, the following has been agreed
as an Emergency signal to be used if the RNLI crew need divers to surface so
that the Lifeboat can launch............
THREE loud bangs on the station structure - gap - THREE loud bangs........
If you dive the Lifeboat Station, then please:
- use an SMB*
- avoid the area directly in front of the station ramp
- come to the surface immediately if you hear the Emergency signal
*Note : whilst directly under the boathouse you might want to leave your SMB
on the line attached to the bottom of the second right hand leg of the
boathouse structure (line leads to large anchor)
Please also pass the message on if you know other divers who visit the site.
