Let's play Dilemma.
I had to make a tough decision during my 10-day green field
Summer Camp. I
was sick with 'flu symptoms, more than 180 miles from home.
We had
visiting leaders from home for a couple of days, and the
opportunity
presented itself to come home early with them. There wouldn't
be a chance
to return, if recovered, so this would leave the remaining
leaders with a
lot of work to do in striking camp a few days later.
But...
If I stayed, there would be risks. It's a 60-mile round trip
for 24/7
medical help that may be needed if complications arose (I'm
in a "high
risk" group for swine 'flu victims) - and, if needed, said
trip would
take away two of the remaining three leaders. There would
also be a risk
of passing on the infection to others. I was also one of the
drivers for
one of the two vehicles, although there was an alternative
driver
available (this had already been assessed as a risk!).
"Should I stay, or should I go?". What would you do?
Go Home.
It may have been too late but even then that would be my
answer.
Like all of these questions there is never a simple answer but
I agree with Dave go home.
Flu symptoms could be swine flu which if you are in the high
risk category could be very serious. There is also the chance
that you could pass it on to others so that not only were you
needing TLC so would other members of the Group. If there were
three Leaders left and enough drivers I would suggest you do
what is best for you and everyone else and go.
So what did you do?
I went home. There was a lot of agonising over making the
decision, but I believe it was the right one. It's two-to-one in
favour at the moment on here, and the one "stay" hasn't backed up
the decision with any reasoning. Indeed, I recall reading a link
on this Group to a documented risk assessment for occurrence of
swine 'flu at camp, and the control measures included isolation
of the infected Scout. We had additional tents with us for this
very purpose, and leaders had their own tents, of course - but
the simplest method of isolation was to come home. Looking back
at the list of symptoms, I could have ticked a lot of the boxes -
in this order, over the course of a few days:
Stomach upset (ignored because of the change in diet)
Chills (thought to be because of the unusually cold weather, 6°C
at night.)
Sneezing (short-lived, mabe only a few hours - ignored, because
it could have been caused by anything in the air),
Runny nose (ignored, because it was during a swimming session at
a public pool - "washing out the sinuses")
Joint pain (ignored, because it was after exercise)
Headache (ignored, put down to not drinking enough water)
Tiredness (ignored - camp is very active!)
Sudden fever, but no cough!
So, all of the symptoms except for the fever could have been
ignored. I have since been reminded that I had been in contact
with a confirmed case of swine 'flu at work, just two days before
we left for camp - indeed, I was shaking hands with the victim,
because the advice given is that once symptoms have begun to
subside, they are no longer infectious...
