I like the concept of the etch a sketch and the golf, but I haven't as yet managed to find any software to ofload the tracks from the Garmin we have apart from Garmin's own which is expensive. So anybody who can point me in the right direction to some cheaper software for thisYou can get an up-to-date, working version of Mapsource for free, and legitimately. Here's a trick to getting MapSource, and it works! Best part is, it's right from Garmin with no hacks or cracks.
Download the Training Center:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=835
Install it
Then download the MapSource update:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209
Install it.
You now have full blown MapSource, enjoy!

This does work, as I've done it. It only provides you with a *VERY* basic world map, but you can add the SMC contour maps to it to get more detail for the UK (http://www.smc.org.uk/ContourMaps.php).
Once you've got the files downloaded in mapsource, they can easily be changed to another format (like GoogleEarth) using a program like GPS Utility (http://www.gpsu.co.uk/)

Thanks for the info and links, but as the SMC doesn't have the contour maps to download, and the way I read it on the forum is that I still need the mapsource maps. Not sure Garmin UK sell just the map without the software, as it doesn't appear as a seperate item on the website

You only need the mapsource maps if you want to see the mapsource maps: the method I've given you will allow you to get your PC and garmin to talk to each other and download routes (tracklogs) from your garmin onto your PC. It will display downloaded routes, but only on the basemap that comes with the Garmin Training Centre (which is very 'base'). However, if you download the SMC contour maps, you can also display your tracklog directly on that map series.
If you want any tracklogs you've downloaded to overlay onto better maps, the best idea is to change them from garmin track files to GoogleEarth kml files, using GPSU. You can then display your tracklogs on GoogleEarth. GPSU should also talk directly to your GPS, but I've found that interface rather clunky and it doesn't allow you to upload maps (like the SMC contour maps) onto your garmin.
As for the SMC contour maps not existing - they are there on the page I specified! They are listed at the bottom of the page as zip files.
