What about:
Twist watch round so hour hand is pointing at the sun. Halfway between
the hour hand and 12 (or 1 if it's BST) is South.
Less accurate as you get closer to the equator, and reverses as you cross
the equator. Between the Tropics the method shows either north or south
depending on the time of year. Whereas the shadow stick is more accurate
closer to the equator, and exactly the same south of the equator, since it's
tracking east-west rather than north-south. In UK you'd need to use the
shadow stick at or around midday to get an accurate east-west.
