Techie reason for why my Palm Pilot Died (feel free to skip!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Early palm pilots to maintain the supply voltage to retain their memory
(its volatile) which means they need a small device (1F capacitor) to hold
the voltage while you change batteries and to smooth out any brief losses
of power due to impact and loose connections.
My particular one (M125) is 8 years old uses a pair of very small
capacitors which only seemed to have had a life of about 4 years before
dieing. This was a design fault and they were withdrawn shortly after the
M125 went of production and even if you could get them they wouldn't work.
The replacement was much bigger and won't fit on the circuit board and
even if I frigged it then the whole thing would be too big for the case
and there isn't enough spare room to even cram them in with extra wires.
Ironically it still works all the time the battery is full but it used dry
cells and as soon as you swap them it loses its contents.
You can synchronise it to a PC but that doesn't help in the middle of a
field at midnight :-(
Don't know physical sizes etc but would 2 or more adding up to 1F fit in the
case if they could be got at a small size and fit in any available space?
Or what about this
