Re: Camp activities

While i do agreew with Marc that we do tend to do the same activites come
rain or shine, I would be worried if there was no shine and there were a
lot a new campers for whome this might come as a bit of a shock, and not
much fun. There is also 'rain' and 'rain' . I have just returned from a
week-end in Wales where it was drizzling continually ( and were comning back
to a warm bunkhouse) I can see both you and the scouts getting totally
fed-up and depressed with the wet. I don't think you just need to have wet
weather sheltetr aand a programme of quizzes, circle games, charrades,
woggle making etc, but you need a little less standing around outside
fiddling with ropes doing pioneering and building sedan chairs, and more
running around like the orienterring.
Lots of hot choc, sausage smash & gravey, and being really silly in a steamy
atmoshphere and going home a bit early I'd say!

This year our District Camp was doing just fine, we had lots of kids
having a great time. Yes, it had rained but it was tolerable. At 12:32
precisely on the Saturday the heavens opened.

We had to cancel archery and shooting, and a number of other
activities became unpleasant. There were a lot of Beavers who had not
come prepared for the wet and all bar one Lodge opted to head for
home. (Guess who's Beavers came prepared ;-) )

As the afternoon wore on the winds picked up, the rain continued.
Trenchfoot became a real risk!

There were predictions of 80mph winds and more rain.

We opted to evacuate the camp. Sometimes coats and boots still don't
make things safe.

The next morning there were clear blue skies and no winds. As I drove
back up to the campsite I thought maybe we had over-reacted. But then
the broken branches on the road, the leaf debris and the toppled
fences suggested that maybe we had been right.

During the evacuation our steel poled mess tent had to be abandoned.
On arrival at the site it looked okay. But on closer inspection the
steel poles had been bent and if joined together almost made a
complete circle.

The few who stayed overnight out of lack of choice said that the hike
tents were fine, but they would not have liked to be in a patrol tent
- we had done the right thing.

This year has been a series of postponements and cancellations. The
slightest hint of rain turns our fields and sites into quagmires. I
have absolutely every expectation that next summer we will have a
hosepipe ban...
