Re: Mixed sleeping conundrum?

Well yes, you are probably right. A couple of years ago we sent-out our first hike group of 5 scouts ( 3 girls and 2 boys) with 2 tents. It was a horrendously stormy week-end. We visited them in the evening and found them crammed in one tent laughing, eating and chatting. A few days afterwards I discovered they had stayed in there all night. Oh dear! I 'happened' to call-in on all the parents and tried to break the news, I was particularly worried about one African girl with very strict parents, she stood behind her dad's chair with her eyes grew wider as I mentioned how well they had done, mentioning in passing the mixed sleeping ....... she had clearly said nothing. Neither they or any of the parents batted an eye-lid..... "Oh is this not what they always do?"
Our rule now is that we don't plan mixed hike- tent sleeping, we accept they might choose to, but that neither boys or girls should feel coerced by their peers into doing so.

Eddie,

We are as flexible as is needed the same as suggested by others, all together in large halls, sharing hike tents etc but make sure the parents know about the arrangements in advance. Most are surprised we bothered to mention it.

However be aware of the occasional YP who have less inhibitions(or common sense) and may not be as discreet as you would hope when changing. Outside of Scouting, when working with various organizations supporting youngsters I have had to deal with the occasional youngster who because of the background, nationality or whatever changes where they stand. I always ensure the changing arrangements we have prescribed are rigidly adhered to. I know its common sense but thought it was worth mentioning.
