How did you get on with this Pete? Thanks.Mind you have you seen the price of leads for the damn things!! £25
just to plug it into a PC!!!!
Crazy - given its just an RS232 cable!
I've just found that the s/w to edit waypoints and routes is not
free or included either ... another £23 :o(
Still, there is a free plugin which means you can download geocaches
as waypoints direct from geocaching.com, which should do for now.
37 cache finds and counting ... !
My original intention was to give it a go to see if it was something which
would work with my Unit, but I seem to have got a bit carried away myself -
it's great fun. I've even hidden a couple of my own and have a third in the
pipeline (once some devilishly small micros I've ordered arrive from the
States!)
I have got a cable to connect the GPS to my PC, then use the
geocaching.com/Garmin plugin to download the waypoints, which works just
fine - saves punching them in by hand.
I've also subscribed to geoaching.com so can run 'pocket queries' which
email a file through which contains not only the published coordinates, but
also any 'additional waypoints' given in the listing. These files can be
opened in EasyGPS (which is a free program) and downloaded to the GPS Unit.
I did buy a copy of Garmin's 'Trip & Waypoint Manager' from eBay (£9.99),.
but EasyGPS is better.
I've not tried it with the Unit yet, but I think it will go down quite
well - its on my list of things for next term - recap on Grid Refs (ties in
the DofE training!), go through Romers then on to GPS and finally get out
and do some caching.
