So I was desperate for another programme idea ... just something different.
And we have been down to 2 leaders & 18 scouts recently.
SO I wrote this note and put it outside and in. ( We meet at 7pm )
"As an exercise in communication there is to be no speaking or noise of any
kind from 6.45 - 7.30pm
PL's will break flag at 7.05 and play the game indoors on the notice board.
In silence."
( On the notice board there pinned a cheap plastic cricket bat set )
We stayed in the kitchen with hatch cracked open and this allowed us time to
set-up the equipment for doing lamps and stoves , axe and fire-lighting
outside.
We were totally gob-smacked! We left them to it and came back-in at 7.20 to
find them playing cricket in total silence, apart from laughing and
groaning. ( a small hall with low ceiling, so plastic ball bouncing all over
the place!)
We sat down at 7.30 and dished-out praise, and heard what they thought they
had learned, mixed feelings..... but equally amazed!
Try it perhaps?

This 'silence' thing seemed like a novel idea so I thought I'd give it a
go with my Cubs. We played Elephants and Hunters and Chair Racing, both in
complete silence. I was gobsmacked! Not only would I have never believed
that they could do it but they seemed to enjoy the extra challenge too.
Pushing my luck somewhat we also played Crab Football with the Cubs only
allowed to make animal noises of my choice, which changed throughout the
game. Dog noises were fine as were cats and sheep but you should have seen
their faces when I told them they could only sound like an aardvark!
Actually, does anyone know what noise an aardvark makes?
Thanks for sharing your idea, Eddie, it certainly added a new dimension to
some of our favourite games and its something we will use again in the
future.

Ok I like this idea of silent games - but somebody is going to have to
put me out of my misery!
I am OK with Crab Football but can somebody please tell me how to play
- Counties, Elephant & Hunters and Chair racing?
