Re: Speechless

Regardless, I suspect that this is an interim relief that will be
legislated out of existence at some time in the future.

Maybe, but the compulsory AALA scheme for professinal providers, seems
to be working well and that does not require that instructors have NGB
certs.

I can see no reason why a District, for example, should not have a
team of paid Adventurous Activity leaders if that is what is required
to provide activities for the Groups in the District.

I am sure that would lead to a 'me too' culture, and it would not be
long before all activity instructors expected to be paid. We should
resist that.

So why because if I choose to spend some of that time becoming a
specialist activity instructor, should I expect to be paid, when they
are not ?

The logic of that argument is that since the leaders are not paid then
the instructors at campsites should not be paid either - and many are.

Thats different, we are talking here about some leaders in a group
context being paid and some not. I would not like to see activities
instructors taken outside of the context of a group.

Take explorers for instance, two leaders, one with an activity
authorisation one without, on a activity when both are involved, is it
fair that one is paid and one is not ?

That need not necessarily be the case. Do the volunteers at the local
hospice feel any less motivated because they work alongside paid
staff?

Stick to the context of a Scout Group, how do you really think the
majority of experienced leaders will react if the new (inexperienced)
leader are paid to 'entice' them into the role, and they are not ?

I could see real posibilities for paid staff in Scouting.

I can see very significant problems.

It is quite possible that we could utilise paid activity instructors
to facilitate acces to activities:-
Hang gliding, Sailing, Kayaking, Climbing, Mountaineering and more,
where there is a shortage of volunteer instructors.

It can work (and does) in the context of specific activity centres.

Correct me if I am wrong but once you start paying activity
instructors, then the instructors now need to register and comply with
AALA requirements. Do you think this would be practical for the average
group ?
