To take your specific example of the North York Moors National Park - the
Fylingdales early warning station is distinctly out of bounds, and an
unfriendly reception may be anticipated should you attempt to prove
otherwise.

I am not that old! Fylindagles was there 30 years ago and its still as well guarded.

The information coming from it now is relatively low grade compared to Satellite intelligence, and it was pretty specifically there to monitor traffic from the USSR which has all but ceased now.

However its still a List X site and you would need permission to visit.

Steve, I thought that Fylingdales is and always has been a BMEWS site, not an ELINT station? The golfballs that were such a landmark when I did the Lyke Wake Walk have been replaced by a phased array pyramid, and as far as I can tell it is still a vital part of the BMEWS net. You will indeed be persuaded not to try to trespass on the site, by guards that are used to dealing with CND protestors and their ilk.

Fylingdales is not on any map :-)

I too have an old 1" Tourist Map of the NYM. It is useful in that it presents the whole area on a manageable sheet, and is good for general reference. Like you, I wouldn't use if for detailed reference, as too many things have changed.
