Ignoring Parents' Wishes

There have been a couple of threads recently that have touched on this
issue, which has got me thinking about it. If the parents of one of
your members expressly tell you that they want their son/daughter to do
something, or not to do something, but the son/daughter chooses
otherwise, what should the leader do? Examples that have been
discussed recently include drinking and vegetarianism.
I know that leaders should act as a "responsible parent", but does that
mean that we can override the wishes of the actual parent?
Does it make a difference how old the YP is?
Is there more flexibility with some issues than with others?
If a YP does decide to go against their parent's wishes, should we tell
the parents afterwards?
What if the parent's request is unreasonable, or would have a negative
impact on other members (e.g. "I don't want my little Johnny doing any
washing up")?
Steve.
